Around The Table
Shabbat is often referred to as a “The Sabbath Queen.” We sing songs to welcome her majesty and bid her farewell, and we prepare an elaborate feast in her honor.
As we sit around the table enjoying the Shabbat meals, it is customary to sing songs that praise God for granting us the gift of Shabbat and celebrate the greatness of this holy day of rest.
Over the years, a tradition has evolved regarding which songs are sung at each of the three Shabbat meals and which at the “Melaveh Malka” meal that some enjoy after Shabbat has ended on Saturday night.
These liturgical, poetic songs create a unique Shabbat atmosphere that enables those sitting around the table to tap into the depth, joy, and holiness of this special day.
