Lag B’Omer & The Story of Rabbi Akiva

This animated video (01:40) briefly tells the story of Rabbi Akiva and his connection to the holiday of Lag B’Omer. Although it was produced for children, the video presents a summary of the story that would be helpful  for beginners of all ages. Raised as an uneducated shepherd during the era of the destruction of the Second Temple, Rabbi Akiva became one of Judaism’s leading scholars after beginning to learn Torah at the age of 40. Lag B’Omer is identified as the day upon which the plague that killed 24,000 of his disciples came to an end, as well as the anniversary of the death of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, Rabbi Akiva’s greatest disciple, credited with revealing the secrets of the Kabbalah to the world through the Zohar. Hailed as a martyr in Jewish tradition, Rabbi Akiva was executed by the Romans for teaching Torah in public.Â
