Remember Us: The Holocaust Bnai Mitzvah Project invites children preparing for their bar/bat mitzvah to connect with the memory of children lost in the Holocaust before they could be called to the Torah. This project provides a simple way for Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrants to make this milestone event even more meaningful, by connecting them to Jewish history and peoplehood while doing something powerful for a victim of the Holocaust. The students will be given the name of a lost child, information about him/her, and suggestions for simple acts of remembrance, such as doing mitzvot b’shem (in the name) of the child, mentioning the child in a dvar Torah or Bar/Bat Mitzvah speech, taking on the mitzvah of saying Kaddish, and lighting a yahrzeit (memorial) candle yearly.
