A Bat Mitzvah Girl Describes the Jewish Rite of Passage

In this introductory video, 12-year old Emily describes her recent Bat Mitzvah at an Orthodox Synagogue, while comparing her experience with that of her friend, Ben, who just celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. She provides a basic explanation of the Jewish rite of passage that celebrates a Jewish boy or girl becoming an adult, who is now responsible for his/her actions and obligated to observe the commandments. As women do not traditionally read from the Torah in Orthodox communities, Emily read the Eishet Chayil (Woman of Valor) poem from Proverbs 31, while Ben read a passage from the Torah. Aimed at the general public who has little knowledge of Judaism, this video was produced by TrueTube, a British website that provides videos about moral, social and religious issues.Â
