In this moving interview [02:21], Holocaust survivor Gerda Klein recalls her feelings upon being liberated from the Nazis. After six tortuous years, during which she prayed constantly for freedom, American soldiers liberated her and the other survivors. Gerda relates that one of the soldiers told her to come with him, and then proceeded to hold the door open for her, letting her exit first. In this moment, she says, he “restored me to humanity again.” This same American soldier later became her husband.
