Take a quick tour of Akko‘s Old City in this clip (3:01) from The Watchman with Erick Stakelbeck. Akko is a unique city rich in Jewish, Muslim, and Christian history. It is a recognized UNESCO Heritage Site and has been consistently inhabited over the past 4000 years. After periods spent in Jewish, Persian, and Byzantine hands during ancient times, Akko came under Islamic rule as early as 638 C.E. and remained an Islamic city until Christian crusaders seized rule from 1104-1291. In 1291, Akko was re-conquered by Muslims and remained under Muslim rule until Israel’s War of Independence in 1948. Today, the old city of Akko is a mosaic of Jews, Arab Muslims (including Bedouins), Arab Christians, Druze, and Bahá’í worshippers, all living peacefully side by side.
